  1. Use natural light and natural air as far as possible. Do not turn on your lights and fans when you have enough day light and proper cross ventilation. Make sure, your outdoor lighting is turned off during day light.
  2. Make use of Solar Energy, bio gas etc. if possible
  3. Turn off lights, fans, computers, TVs and other appliances when not in use.
  4. Switch over to Eco friendly and high Energy Efficient Appliances of high star rating. More stars means more energy efficient.
  5. Change your conventional incandescent light bulbs to CFL ( compact fluorescent lamps ) which saves up to 75% of energy and will last longer.
  6. Use low voltage bulbs in areas where you do not require bright light
  7. Minimise the usage of high energy consuming appliances like Air-conditioners, Room Heaters, Water Heaters, Washing Machines, Ovens, Cloth Dryers, Iron Boxes, water pumps etc.
  8. Avoid ironing wet clothes, when clothes are wet it takes more current for drying.
  9. Do not leave the fridge or freezer door open for longer than necessary. Decide before opening what you want from the refrigerator or freezer so you don’t waste electricity by standing there looking inside and keeping the door open. Do not put any hot food into the refrigerator or freezer. Allow it to cool to the room temperature if possible. Make sure the fridge door closes properly.
  10. Try to cook more dishes in the Oven at the same time.
  11. Fill your Washing Machines, Dryers, Dish washers etc. efficiently and limit the number of times you use it.
  12. During sunny days, allow the clothes to dry in air instead of using Dryer.
  13. When you use Water Heater, set your temperature to maximum of 60 degree centigrade ( 140 degree farheinheat ) otherwise it may be unbearable. Aslo use the water without delay otherwise the hot water will become cold.
  14. Do not waste water. Lot of energy is used for pumping the water which you use lavishly.
  15. Give proper ventilation to heating appliances otherwise it will consume more energy and also the appliances can get damaged faster.
  16. Check your electrical wiring and earthing properly whether that can take the load of your appliances. Loose contacts and improper wiring results into higher energy consumption. Also get checked your appliances individually and if it is observed that it is taking more current, get it rectified or otherwise change the same.
  17. When you go out for a trip for few days, be sure to unplug your appliances. They have stand by functions that consume electricity even when they are turned off.
  18. AIR-CONDITIONRES: When you talk about energy saving, proper use of air-conditioner plays a very vital role. Take care of the following points which can lower your electricity bill considerably:

Maximum possible, avoid use of air-conditioner instead use fans for better health.

Ac is used for comfort. When you use AC set the temperature ideally on 25 degree C which is very comfortable level and do not over chill your room. Every degree you reduce in the temperature setting, you save 5 – 7 % of energy. The less the difference between the indoor and outdoor temperature, the lower will be the bills. When you come out of a very chilled room due to high temperature difference, the chances of getting thermal shock is very high. Thermal shocks are not good for health.

If your AC is equipped with Sleep Mode function ( night mode ) use this function at night so that you can save energy by additional 10%. Using this function is advisable as the temperature required by the body is less when you sleep. In sleep mode function, the temperature setting is automatically increased by 2- 4 degrees whereby the running time of the compressor is reduced drastically and thus the consumption of energy is reduced.

When you use the air-conditioner, close the doors and windows properly and reduce the air gaps. Also avoid frequent opening and closing of the windows and doors which will result into more energy consumption due to fresh air intake by the air-conditioner.

For the top floors where the terrace is exposed to direct sun light, it is advisable to put false ceiling with two inch thick thermocole or glass wool bags inside so that the load on the air-conditioner can be reduced. Thermocole and glass wool acts as a very good insulator. A roof garden also can reduce the load on your air-conditioner.

Put sun control films, venation blinds and curtains on glass windows where direct sunlights hits your room. It is also advisable to plant trees and shrubs around your house which will lower the exposure to sun.

Putting shades and giving proper air ventilation to the out door unit ( condenser ) of the air-conditioner can reduce the electric consumption considerably. Leave sufficient space in the back side of the outdoor unit for suction of fresh air as well as in front for discharge of hot air. In case of obstructions, the hot air can be sucked back by the system due to short cycling and due to lack of proper condensation compressor will take more current.

Do not put furniture, Computer, TV etc. in front of the air-conditioning vents. Do not put any appliances emitting heat or hot things near to the thermostat of the air-conditioner. The thermostat senses heat from these appliances which can cause the air-conditioner running longer than necessary.

Use Energy Efficient air-conditioners of high star ratings. Now, more energy efficient air-conditioners are available with invertor technology. Compared to normal air-conditioners, invertor type air-conditioners draw 30% lesser electricity.

Air-conditioners are to be serviced periodically ( at least once in 3 months ) for better efficiency. If the coils are blocked the air-conditioner will draw more current to cool the room. The refrigerant piping are to be insulated properly for heat loss. If the insulation is torn, this also can adversely affect the cooling.
